NEWS RELEASE: VISAYAN DAILY STAR-BACOLOD CITY JULY 1984
|
MT. YARIGATAKE (3,180-m)- literally the "Spear Mountain", located in the northern Japan
alps of Nagano prefecture, is known to many as the "Matterhorn of Japan".
Mt. Yari (as the locals call it), is a picturesque image of a mountain that rises and appears to "pierce"
the sky with its typical pointed summit.
|
|
MT. KINABALU (4,101-m)- located in the East Malaysian State of Sabah in Borneo, is the
highest peak in So.East Asia.
Climbs up Mt. Kinabalu may have already been undertaken by Filipinos in the past, but our climb as
a "Team" representing a member-club of the Mountaineering Federation of the Philippines was probably the first- if NOT really
the FIRST, to be launched in April of 1983.
The team, led by ARTURO T. VALDEZ (who eventually led the FIRST successful Filipino
ascent of Mt. Everest in May of 2006), also included MAYO C. MONTEZA, FRED JAMILI
(one of the members of the First Philippine Mt. Everest Expedition 2006 team), and EDWIN GATIA.
|

|

MT. MORRISON (3,997-m)- also known as Mt. Yu Shan ("Jade Mountain),
is the highest peak in Northeast Asia located in the highlands of the Republic of China (Taiwan).
